National Junior Honor Society
Scholarship, Leadership, Citizenship, Service , and Character
The purpose of this outline is to give you information about the National Junior Honor Society. If you are a second semester sixth, seventh, or eighth grade student with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above, you will be eligible to be considered for N.J.H.S. membership. Parents, you may wish to advise your child on the importance of this organization. Students will receive the survey materials after second quarter grades.
Selection Process
I. Students must be a member of the sixth, seventh, or eighth grade class.
A. Must receive grades from Washington-Caldwell middle school for at least two consecutive terms.
B. Previous school’s grades will be considered for transfer students.
II. To be eligible for consideration, a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or above.
A. Membership selection will take place after the second grading period. (January grading period)
B. Washington –Caldwell uses four grading periods (each nine weeks)
III Students who are scholastically eligible
A. A deadline will be listed on the cover letter sent to prospective students. Students who do not return the survey by the deadline will not be considered for membership.
B. If you do not return the survey, you are declining an opportunity for membership in NJHS and will not be eligible in the future.
IV Those students who respond will be evaluated by the entire Washington-Caldwell staff in the areas of citizenship, leadership, service, and character.
A. The faculty council consisting of five voting members and the chapter adviser will examine the student surveys and the staff evaluations.
B. Membership will be granted on the basis of a majority vote of the faculty council.
V Selected students become official members after the induction ceremony.
VI To remain members students must maintain these high standards of leadership, citizenship, service, and character.
A. Members who fall below a 3.5 cumulative G.P.A. will have two quarters in which to bring their G.P.A. above the 3.5 level.
B. Members who do not increase their G.P.A. after these two quarters will be dropped from membership.
C. All members will be required to complete and document at least six hours of community service.
VII Membership in N.J.H.S is an honor and privilege
A. All actions of the faculty council are strictly confidential.
B. Those sixth graders not selected may submit surveys during seventh grade.
C. Those seventh graders not selected may submit surveys during eighth grade.
