Sixth Grade Social Studies
March 5, 2018
Geography students took the long-form test on Europe on Tuesday, and they have a map test on the Caucuses and the Middle East on Tuesday, March 6. Students have a study guide for this test. Students learned about armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait and Lebanon. Students will wrap up the Middle East next week and move into the “Stans” part of central Asia.

This week students worked on a packet about Northern Europe, finished a study guide map of Northern Europe and studied Iceland. The map test on Northern Europe will be on Thursday of next week.

On Thursday, students took the map test on the Caribbean. The long form test on the Caribbean has taken longer to correct than expected, but will be in Power School by Monday. Students began work on a packet of information of the Caribbean and Central America. No new study guides have been sent home yet. There may be an alternate assessment about the nations of the Caribbean next week. This will be in place of a test. After the Caribbean, students will begin a study of South America. Yes, there is a song to help them learn the countries and capitals.

On Thursday, October 26, students took the long-form test on Central America. This will be graded by Monday. The map test on the Caribbean will be on Thursday, November 2. Students have been learning about the larger islands of the Caribbean known as the Greater Antilles, and will practice locating the smaller islands known as the lesser Antilles in class, but they will need to study at home. Students have a study guide for the map test. The long-form test on the Caribbean will be the following Thursday, November 9. A study guide will be sent home by Friday, November 3.

Students completed the study guide for the essay test on Central America; the test will be on Tuesday, October 24. Students also completed a map of the Caribbean, and began their study of the island nations. The map test for the Caribbean will be on Tuesday, October 31. Students have their own study guide for this map test and a master copy will be handed out on Tuesday.

This week students took the map test on Central America and received a study guide for the main test on Central America. Students worked on the study guide on Friday, and will continue working on it on Tuesday since we don’t have class on Monday. Once the study guide is complete, the test on that material will one week later. The earliest this test will be is on Tuesday, October 24.

On Wednesday, of last week, students took the exam on Canada. The results of the exam will be posted to the gradebook by Monday afternoon. Students continued to study Central America. There is another catchy video on YouTube if you would like to learn the countries of Central America. We will finish up Central America next week and have a test on Mexico and Central America the following week.

This week students completed a study guide of Canada for the test next week. If students study the study guide and map, they will perform well on test. As always students watched CNN10 and discussed current events from around the world, especially the hurricanes in the Caribbean and the earthquakes in Mexico. Mexico happens to be our next area of study. Students completed a map of Mexico with its significant landforms and investigated its significant geographical aspects. The test on Canada will be next week Wednesday. Please have your son or daughter study

This week students completed letters to their Jamaican pen pals, completed a map of Australia and surrounding archipelagos, and took an open note quiz on Australia. Students also worked on presentations of African countries. The essay test on Asia has been postponed until Tuesday, May 9.

Students took an essay test on the Middle East on Friday. Students were allowed to use their notes and the Internet to answer the questions and the questions were provided the day before the test. This exam tested students’ ability to synthesize information to form the most complete answer. Next week students will begin Central Asia and then move to China and Indochina.

Students received the map study guide for the next test on the Caucuses and the Middle East. This test is scheduled for Thursday, March 9. Students also worked on a packet about the area and took notes on the Middle East. Mrs. Fox picked up the next pen pal letters for their journey to Jamaica.

Students have a study guide for the countries of Eastern Europe map test. This includes the location of the countries and their capitals. The Eastern Europe map test will be on Wednesday, February 8. We are approaching the end of our study of the Europe, and this will culminate with a test. Students have a copy of the eight essay questions on the test. It would be a good idea to study these now for the test. This test on Europe will be the week of February 13. The test will be multiple choice, short answer and the eight essay questions. Students will receive a study guide for the multiple choice and short answer questions next week.

Students took the map test on Western Europe this week. Students also leaned about Northern Europe: the Scandinavian Peninsula and the Nordic countries. They also took an in-depth look at Denmark. Students will begin learning the map of Eastern Europe next week.

Students took the map test on Mediterranean Europe; these tests were corrected and returned. Students are now learning about the rest of Western Europe. Students have a study guide for the map test for the rest of Western Europe. This map test will be Friday, January 27. Students will also have a multiple choice and short answer test about tall of Western Europe. We will then move onto Eastern Europe.

Students also learned more information about the major countries in Southern Europe and participated in the sixth grade Geography Bee. Congratulations to Isabelle Berceau and Ashton Cairns.

Students received their South American test. Continued to study Europe. Europe will be broken into three areas. We are starting with Mediterranean Europe, then moving to Western Europe and we will finish with Eastern Europe. Mrs. Mandy Fox delivered letters from our Jamaican Pen Pals and showed photos of the students who wrote back to us. Students had time to write back to their Jamaican friends and also learned about Washington-Caldwell’s forensic team.

Students were able to see photos of Jamaican kids reading their pen pal letters. It was exciting to see students far away reading letters from Washington-Caldwell and then writing letters back. It will be fun to read the letters when they arrive. Mandy Fox will be had delivering the letters when she and her husband return from their humanitarian trip to the island. Students also continued to study South America. Students will complete a short study guide on Monday and will have a short final test on South America on Thursday, December 22.

Caribbean tests were handed back this week, and students continued studying South America. Students took the map test on South America on Friday. Students had an opportunity to write letters to possible pen pals in Jamaica. Mrs. Mandy Fox will hand deliver the letters this week and hopefully will return, in several weeks, with letters from kids in Jamaica. This can be a great way for out students to learn about how other people live. Students will complete the study of South America next week and will have a test before Christmas break. After Christmas break, we will begin studying western Europe.

Students took the expanded test on the Caribbean on Friday. Tests will be corrected by Monday. This week students have begun learning about the geography of South America. Students have learned another infectious song to help them learn and remember the countries and capitals of the South American countries. They have also begun learning about the countries of South America with Brazil and Argentina. Students will have a map test on South America on Friday, December 9 that will include knowing the location and capitals of the countries of South America.

Students will wrap up their study of the Caribbean on Monday with the test the following Monday, November 21. Students learned the truth about the Bermuda Triangle this week, as well as more islands in the Lesser Antilles, the Dominican Republic, the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, and Puerto Rico. On Friday, students played a round of Mystery Skype with Mrs. Hegemann’s seventh grade class. We won!

Students learned about the geography of Central America this week, including an interesting article about the decline of democracy in Nicaragua and Panama. The next test will include Mexico and Central America, and students will receive the study guide on Monday.

Students took the test on the geography of he United States; it took two days to complete. They also started to study the geography of Mexico. Students also participated in a practice Mystery Skype with Mrs. Hegemann’s class. A Mystery Skype is a geographical game played by two classrooms in different pars of the world. The object of the game is to find the location of the other class using yes or no questions.
Students will be studying the geography of the world this year in sixth grade social studies. We have started on North America with Canada. We will then move to the United States, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and South America. Students will get a study guide at least a week before each test. We will conclude Canada next week and students will receive a study guide for the test. Students will need to locate items on a map; this will always be a part of the study guide. Students can always practice locating countries in advance, and they will receive several apps to help them with this next week.

Students took the Middle East map test on Thursday and began work on a study guide for the multiple choice/short answer test on Friday. Students will take that test on Friday, March 18. Students will next begin studying the countries of the central Asia.

Students have created geography videos with a partner on selected Middle East countries. Some students have shared their videos and we will continue viewing them on Monday and Tuesday. In these videos students are covering physical geography, political geography, demographics of the citizens of the country, and allies or enemies this country may have.
We will conclude our study of the Middle East this week. Students will receive a study guide for both the map testing of the Middle East and the multiple choice/short answer test. Students can begin to study the locations of the countries, their capitals, and major physical features of the Middle East, including, the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Aden. A good resource to study the countries of any region in the world is Sheppard Software. This is not accessible on iPads, but can be accessed through desk tops, laptops, or android devices.

There is a test on Russia on Tuesday. Students have a study guide for this test. Students have also begun work on the countries of middle Asia including Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey. Next week we will begin study of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the other countries in the Middle East. We focus on location of these counties, capital cities, physical features, demographics of the populations, language, religion, and any interesting distinctive aspects a country may have.

Students took the map portion of the test on Eastern Europe on Thursday. They needed to locate the countries of Eastern Europe and know their capital cities. They will be given a study guide on Monday for the multiple choice and short answer test on Eastern Europe. This test will be on Monday, February 8. A correction from last week’s newsletter, we are going to move onto Russia after Europe, not Africa.

Students completed two days of testing this week on Western Europe. On Wednesday students were tested on the location of countries, waterways, mountains and other physical features. They also were tested on the capitals of the major countries of Western Europe. On Thursday students completed a multiple choice and short answer test on Western Europe. We have begun studying Eastern Europe which includes the countries of the former Soviet Bloc. It would be helpful if students would start studying the locations of the countries a few at a time. They can start with the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuanian and work their way down through the Balkan countries.
Geography is important because it allows us to understand the world we live in and make independent, informed decisions using this understanding.
